Googlebot updated its JSON-LD parsing to apply only a single HTML unescaping pass, requiring web developers globally to ensure standard JSON escaping to avoid structured data errors.
The change means that double-escaped HTML entities, such as &, will no longer be automatically corrected, potentially invalidating structured data and causing a loss of rich results in Google Search.
Google announced the update via its Google Search Central LinkedIn account, stating the parser now adheres more strictly to JSON and other web standards.
Developers are advised to transition to standard JSON escapes or hexadecimal Unicode escapes, such as u0026 for an ampersand, to ensure their structured data remains valid.
Gary Illyes, a Google analyst, referenced RFC 8259, section 7, to define the correct method for JSON escaping, emphasizing the importance of adherence to established standards.
The company recommended that developers utilize tools like Google’s Rich Results Test to validate their JSON-LD tags and identify any malformed entities that could lead to parsing failures.
This increased strictness by Googlebot demands immediate action from web developers to review and update their existing JSON-LD implementations.
Failure to update could result in structured data not being correctly interpreted by Googlebot, thereby impacting search visibility and the display of rich snippets.
The move aligns Googlebot’s parsing behavior more closely with industry specifications for JSON, promoting more predictable structured data processing across the web.
Webmasters and SEO professionals are urged to prioritize these adjustments to maintain optimal performance in Google Search.
