Google Search Advocate John Mueller said fundamental technical SEO principles and foundational website quality remain essential for success in the artificial intelligence search environment.
Mueller emphasized that AI Search does not fundamentally alter core requirements for an effective search engine optimization strategy, urging businesses to focus on building a strong website foundation.
He cautioned against over-reliance on short-term tactics, such as the proliferation of listicles, which he indicated could be perceived as spam if they lack genuine value. Mueller predicted such tactics would become increasingly ineffective as AI systems continue to advance.
Businesses were advised to diligently monitor their SEO vendors, as questionable practices seen in traditional SEO are now being adapted and applied within AI SEO, according to Mueller.
Technical SEO is expected to maintain its high relevance for AI systems, even if AI crawlers eventually operate with different objectives, such as data training versus fresh content discovery, Mueller noted during a discussion reported by Search Engine Journal.
David Iwanow, an experienced SEO professional, observed a resurgence of outdated, low-quality tactics, including cloaking, the use of directories, and reciprocal linking. Iwanow said newer practitioners are rediscovering these methods in the context of AI, often unaware of their past ineffectiveness.
Mueller reiterated that while AI introduces new dimensions to search, the foundation of a successful online presence continues to be a technically sound website delivering high-quality, valuable content to users.
