Google updated its spam guidelines, provided restaurants with direct control over third-party ordering providers, and offered new insights into AI-generated search answers globally on Wednesday.

These changes reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to refine its search indexing, enhance business tools, and adapt to artificial intelligence in search results, according to company statements.

The updated spam guide now recommends using ‘noindex’ or crawl-blocking mechanisms for pages intended for sharing but not for public search discovery. This guidance aims to help webmasters manage content visibility more effectively, Google reported.

Separately, restaurants can now disable specific third-party ordering providers directly from their Google Business Profile dashboard. This global feature allows businesses to manage their online presence and service offerings with greater autonomy, according to Google.

Regarding indexing data, John Mueller, a Search Advocate at Google, advised users questioning stale page indexing to verify report dates. Mueller noted that indexing changes occur slowly and that recent reports are crucial for accurate assessment.

Analysis of AI answers within search results revealed distinct patterns in how content is cited. Pages cited by AI answers more frequently began with a direct answer, occurring in 23 percent of cases, compared to 14 percent for uncited pages, according to the analysis.

This data suggests a correlation between the structural presentation of information on a page and its likelihood of being referenced in AI-generated summaries. The findings offer insights into how AI models identify and utilize source material.

Google continues to evolve its algorithms and tools to combat spam and improve the relevance of search results for users globally, a company spokesperson said.
