Google’s Open Knowledge Format Criticized for Limited Data Sharing

Google’s Open Knowledge Format (OKF) primarily functions as a metadata layer for private BigQuery tables, failing to meet its stated goal of widespread knowledge sharing, according to a recent analysis.

The critique argues that Google‘s current OKF implementation describes private data accessible only to agents, rather than facilitating direct data exchange or broader dissemination of information.

The analysis, which presented an alternative approach, highlighted that Google’s OKF acts more as an annotation layer for internal systems than a mechanism for external data sharing.

Marie Haynes, an expert in the field, described an alternative method that involves creating autonomous data bundles containing both enriched data, such as Discover data, and the interpretive expertise or “playbooks” required to understand it.

These self-contained bundles are designed to operate independently, eliminating the need for external synchronization or direct access to the data producer’s warehouse, Haynes explained.

The proposed autonomous bundles are deterministically produced without the use of large language models (LLMs) and incorporate “GUARDRAILS” concepts.

These guardrails ensure that analyses are auditable and reproducible, providing detailed information on data capture methods and performance metrics, according to the analysis.

The author’s approach aims to provide a more comprehensive and transparent method for sharing knowledge and data, contrasting with what they characterized as the limited scope of Google’s current OKF.

Google has positioned OKF as a tool for sharing knowledge, but critics contend its application primarily serves to describe data within Google’s private ecosystem.
