Global technology giant Google began rolling out its May 2026 core update and unveiled significant artificial intelligence integrations across its Search platform during its annual I/O conference, fundamentally altering search engine optimization strategies.
The concurrent developments, including the second core update of the year, signal a major shift in how information is retrieved and ranked, moving toward more conversational and AI-driven queries.
Google initiated the May 2026 core update on May 21, a process expected to take up to two weeks to fully deploy, the company reported.
Alongside the update, Google introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default model for its AI Mode and redesigned the Search box, describing it as the most substantial upgrade in more than 25 years.
Upcoming information agents, designed to continuously monitor the web and deliver updates, are slated for release this summer, raising questions among industry experts regarding content citation practices.
AI Mode currently serves more than 1 billion monthly users, with query lengths tripling and follow-up queries increasing by 40 percent monthly in the United States, according to Google’s usage data.
More than 16 percent of searches within AI Mode are multimodal, incorporating various input types, Google stated.
Planning queries, which involve more complex information gathering, are growing 80 percent faster than overall AI Mode usage, the company reported.
Marie Haynes, founder of Marie Haynes Consulting Inc., noted that the core update and AI changes mean search engine optimization (SEO) will shift from traditional keyword focus to a greater emphasis on visibility within AI-generated answers, according to comments reported by Mentions.
Harpreet Singh Chatha, a senior director at Skai, emphasized that content creators must now prioritize direct answers and comprehensive information to appear in AI Overviews, as reported by Mentions.
Jake Ward, a senior vice president at Seer, highlighted the challenge for SEO professionals to adapt to a situation where AI provides answers directly, potentially reducing clicks to original sources, Mentions reported.
Jeffrey Cohen, co-founder of Mentions, stated that the changes require a re-evaluation of how content is created and optimized for discoverability in an AI-first search environment.
Alisa Scharf, also a co-founder of Mentions, indicated that the evolution of Google Search, particularly with AI agents, will necessitate a deeper understanding of user intent and the nuances of conversational queries.
The company’s moves come as competitors like Bing have also integrated AI into their search offerings, intensifying the race for AI dominance in information retrieval.
Industry analysts anticipate that the full impact of these changes on web traffic and content monetization will become clearer as the core update concludes and AI features become more widely adopted.
