Google is globally expanding its generative user interface (UI) to AI Overviews and AI Mode, embedding interactive tools and simulations directly within search results and potentially challenging traditional tool-based websites.

The feature, which creates personalized visual layouts, was initially introduced in November 2025 with Gemini 3 and became universally available in Search at I/O 2026, Google said.

Initially designed for educational applications, the generative UI now supports a broader range of tasks, including financial calculations like mortgage calculators.

A research paper published by Google indicated that participants preferred generated interfaces over top search results in 90 percent of head-to-head comparisons for chatbot-like prompts. For information-seeking prompts, the preference for generated interfaces stood at 73.5 percent.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has previously emphasized the company’s commitment to integrating advanced AI capabilities across its product ecosystem.

The generative UI demonstrates particular effectiveness in reproducing tools that rely on generic inputs and publicly available mathematical functions, such as unit converters and mortgage calculators, Google reported.

However, the technology faces limitations when dealing with non-public data or workflows that require user login, according to the company’s findings.

The expansion of these interactive tools directly within Google’s search environment poses a competitive threat to websites that depend on embedded tools and search engine traffic for their business models.

Organizations like the Pew Research Center have previously highlighted the increasing influence of search engines on information access and user behavior.

The global rollout in English for both AI Mode and AI Overviews marks a substantial shift in how users might interact with search results, moving beyond simple information retrieval to direct task completion within the search interface itself.
