Google has begun embedding entire Top Stories carousels directly within its AI Overviews in search results, a move fundamentally altering content visibility for publishers and brands in the United States and United Kingdom.

This integration means that users encountering AI Overviews for certain queries will see news content directly within the generative AI response, potentially reducing clicks to original news sites.

John Shehata, CEO of NewzDash, first observed this development, noting that the traditional standalone Top Stories carousel no longer appears further down the search page when it is embedded in an AI Overview. Data from NewzDash indicated that 15.5 percent of U.S. and 17.46 percent of UK trending news queries now display Top Stories within AI Overviews, with entertainment-related searches showing the highest prevalence.

Publishers seeking to prevent their content from appearing in these AI Overviews may find existing tools insufficient. The robots.txt directive for Google-Extended, intended for AI training and grounding, does not prevent content from appearing in AI Overviews or embedded Top Stories, according to Google.

In response to publisher concerns, Google is testing a new generative AI exclusion within Search Console. This feature, currently limited to UK site owners, will allow publishers to opt out of AI Overviews and generative Discover features, Google said.

Industry observers suggested that Google’s decision to integrate credible news sources into AI Overviews represents an effort to rebuild user trust in AI-generated answers. This strategy mirrors past instances of what some have termed ‘vertical creep,’ where Google has integrated specialized content directly into its main search results.

The shift challenges publishers to re-evaluate their content strategies and engagement models as Google continues to develop its search interface with generative AI capabilities.
