GLOBAL — Google has issued new guidance for web developers, advising them to optimize websites for artificial intelligence agents in addition to human users, signaling a significant shift in design priorities.
The official inclusion of ‘agent-friendliness’ on Google’s web.dev site signals the company’s integration of AI agent interaction into core developer recommendations, reshaping future web experiences.
The new recommendations instruct developers to consider AI agents as a distinct audience when designing and building websites, according to the web.dev platform.
AI agents interpret web content through multiple methods, including visual screenshots via vision models, analysis of raw HTML document object model (DOM) structure, and the site’s accessibility tree.
To create agent-friendly websites, Google recommends several key practices. These include the consistent use of semantic HTML, which provides meaningful structure to content.
Developers should also ensure stable layouts for web pages and utilize appropriate linking tags to guide AI agents. Additionally, setting the CSS property cursor: pointer for clickable elements helps agents identify interactive components.
Google stated that optimizing websites for AI agents inherently improves the experience for human users as well. This approach aligns with existing web standards and best practices for accessibility and usability.
The company’s guidance also links to WebMCP, a proposed web standard designed for agent interaction. WebMCP is currently in an early preview program, which is accepting sign-ups from interested developers.
The integration of AI agent optimization into Google’s core developer guidance, accessible via web.dev, underscores a major evolution in how websites are expected to function and interact with emerging technologies.
Organizations like Chrome, Summit Art Creations, and Shutterstock are among those cited in discussions surrounding the changing web environment, according to Google’s developer resources.
Slobodan Manic, a figure mentioned in relation to these developments, was not immediately available for comment regarding the new standards.
