Global advertisers expressed growing concerns about rising costs and diminishing traffic quality in Google’s search advertising products following the company’s significant investments in artificial intelligence and its recent third-quarter financial results.
Alphabet shares declined approximately 13 percent after its third-quarter earnings report indicated slower growth in Search revenue, alongside substantial capital expenditures directed toward AI initiatives, prompting scrutiny from marketers.
Google allocated $51.36 billion to capital expenditures during the third quarter and reported a negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion, according to its financial disclosures.
Advertisers voiced specific worries regarding unwanted traffic, broader keyword matching and a perceived reduction in targeting precision within Google’s ad platforms.
Marketers Max Anderson and Daniel Koss contended that Google is maintaining its revenue by increasing charges for traffic that delivers lower quality leads or conversions. They drew parallels to traditional media outlets that raise prices as demand for their services decreases.
A key point of contention for advertisers is the integration of Google’s AI Mode performance data with standard campaign reporting. This combination prevents marketers from independently analyzing acquisition costs, conversion rates or lead quality specifically for AI-driven traffic.
Google’s published auction and budget rules permit considerable cost-per-click (CPC) rates and allow daily spending to reach up to twice the average daily budget, factors that contribute to advertiser anxieties about potentially irrelevant clicks and budget overruns.
The lack of granular reporting for AI-powered campaigns means advertisers cannot isolate the performance metrics of AI-generated traffic from traditional search campaigns, making it difficult to assess the return on investment for AI-influenced ad spend.
These developments have led to a growing backlash among advertisers who rely on Google’s search ecosystem to reach customers, raising questions about the future efficacy and transparency of digital advertising as AI integration deepens.
