Amazon’s unexpected withdrawal from U.S. Google Shopping on July 23, 2025, has persisted for a full year, creating a lasting but different impact on digital advertising than initially predicted.
The e-commerce giant has maintained a zero percent impression share in the U.S. market, despite briefly returning to international Google Shopping markets within a month of its initial global exit.
Initial industry forecasts suggested a significant reduction in cost-per-click (CPC) for competing retailers, but data from the third quarter of 2025 showed only a modest 1 percent year-over-year decline in CPCs, according to Smarter Ecommerce.
Google Shopping spending across other retailers increased 14 percent, and clicks rose 15 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2025, indicating that other advertisers rapidly filled the void left by Amazon, Tinuiti reported.
Retailers like Temu, Shein, and Walmart significantly boosted their presence on Google Shopping following Amazon’s departure, according to an analysis by Vervaunt.
Mike Ryan, CEO of Smarter Ecommerce, told reporters that the market quickly adapted, demonstrating the resilience of the Google Shopping ecosystem.
Josh Duggan, a senior manager at Optmyzr, noted that while Amazon’s exit was substantial, the overall growth in e-commerce meant other advertisers were eager to expand their reach.
Andy Taylor, vice president of research at Tinuiti, stated that the competitive situation shifted, but the fundamental demand for digital ad space remained strong.
Brandon Yann, a director at VML, commented that the sustained absence highlighted Amazon’s strategic focus on its own advertising platforms and direct traffic.
Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has not publicly commented on Amazon’s sustained absence from its U.S. shopping platform.
The long-term impact suggests a more diversified advertiser base on Google Shopping, rather than a sustained period of lower costs for all remaining participants.
