AI prompt tracking needs shift to volatility, average responses

Traditional AI prompt tracking methods are failing. Experts advocate for a shift to volatility and average response tracking for accurate brand measurement.

Industry experts said global AI prompt tracking requires a fundamental shift from traditional rank tracking to volatility and average response analysis to accurately measure brand presence in generative AI.

The dynamic nature of artificial intelligence models and their outputs makes conventional rank tracking methods for AI prompts too volatile and often inaccurate, prompting calls for a new methodological approach.

Kevin Indig, an industry analyst, highlighted that traditional rank tracking often provides an incomplete picture. For instance, third-party tools like Ahrefs reported only one to three citations for a website within Copilot, while Copilot itself indicated more than 36,000 citations for the same site.

Indig noted that the release of ChatGPT’s Model 5 in August 2025 significantly reduced citation links in HTML, causing many existing AI citation tracking tools to fail. This event underscored the fragility of current tracking methodologies.

A new approach should incorporate ‘volatility tracking’ to measure the stability of a brand’s presence in AI outputs, rather than focusing on static rankings. This method aims to assess how consistently a brand appears across various prompts over time.

Additionally, ‘average response tracking’ is proposed to understand the sentiment, context, and overall inclusion of a brand within AI-generated content. This moves beyond simple presence to analyze the quality and nature of mentions.

The success narrative for AI tracking needs to evolve beyond merely chasing top spots, Indig said. Instead, the focus should shift to valuing risk mitigation, ensuring brand sentiment stability, and protecting market share.

This redefinition of success moves away from vanity metrics, advocating for a more comprehensive understanding of return on investment (ROI) in the context of generative AI.

Companies like Shutterstock, which rely on AI for content generation and distribution, could benefit from these advanced tracking methods to maintain brand integrity and market position.
