Global brands are re-evaluating their search engine optimization and content strategies as artificial intelligence large language models increasingly provide direct answers to consumer queries, diminishing traditional organic web traffic.

The shift necessitates a new approach for brands to secure citations and positive recommendations within AI-generated responses, according to the AEO Playbook, a guide for achieving visibility in AI answers.

AI crawlers now visit websites thousands of times without directing user traffic, fundamentally altering web economics, Search Engine Journal reported. Consumers are receiving answers from platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude before engaging with traditional search results pages.

Pat Reinhart of Conductor said the average AI prompt is 23 words, a significant increase from the three-to-four-word average for traditional keywords, requiring a tailored prompt index strategy.

The objective for brands is to transition from a mere mention to a strong recommendation from AI, establishing them as authorities in their respective fields, said Lindsay Boyajian Hagan, also from Conductor.

YouTube has emerged as the most frequently cited site across major large language models, indicating its importance for content strategy.

If an LLM cites platforms like Reddit for topics that a brand should dominate, it signals a deficiency in quality content from those brands, according to the AEO Playbook.

Tracking AI recommendations should prioritize “digestible chunks” of information rather than attempting to monitor thousands of individual prompts, Boyajian Hagan advised.

Content freshness signals for LLMs are not solely dependent on publication dates but also on performance and actual content updates, Conductor reported.

Companies such as Guitar Center, Bass Pro, Chewy, Twilio, and Verizon are among those adapting to this digital marketing environment.
