The global AI chatbot market is consolidating around major platforms, prompting debate among marketers and analysts regarding the relevance of tracking smaller competitors like Perplexity.
This market shift highlights strategic advantages held by platforms such as OpenAI‘s ChatGPT, Google‘s Gemini, and Anthropic‘s Claude, which have established distinct niches in consumer, search, and enterprise sectors.
Ross Hudgens of Siege Media argued that Perplexity’s market share was shrinking and should be removed from large language model (LLM) trackers, according to recent statements.
Data from StatCounter supported this view, showing Perplexity’s AI chatbot referral share declined from 7.91 percent in June 2026 to 4.31 percent in August 2026.
During the same period, Google’s Gemini saw its share rise from 7.94 percent to 10.9 percent, StatCounter reported.
Similarweb data from May 2026 indicated that ChatGPT dominated worldwide web visits among major AI assistants with 53.9 percent.
Gemini held 27.9 percent of visits, followed by Claude at 9.2 percent, and Perplexity at 1.3 percent, according to Similarweb.
ChatGPT’s share of AI chatbot web traffic decreased from 76.4 percent a year earlier to 52.7 percent in May 2026.
Conversely, Gemini’s share grew significantly from 9 percent to 27.3 percent, and Claude’s increased from 1.6 percent to 8.9 percent during the same period, Similarweb reported.
Google’s AI Overviews, a feature in its search engine, reached more than 2.5 billion users per month by June/August 2026.
Additionally, Google’s AI Mode surpassed 1 billion monthly users by June/August 2026 and appeared in 43 percent of Google U.S. searches by May 2026.
Claude has established a strong position in enterprise and developer workflows, with Anthropic reporting more than 100,000 customers running Claude on Amazon Bedrock.
Anthropic also reported annualized revenue exceeding $65 billion, underscoring Claude’s success in the business sector.
The market appears to be consolidating into an oligopoly, with ChatGPT leading in consumer adoption, Gemini leveraging Google’s extensive distribution, and Claude specializing in enterprise solutions, according to analysts.
