WASHINGTON — Generational divides in artificial intelligence brand preference are stark, with Anthropic‘s Claude significantly favored by Gen Z users in the United States, according to new data released by YouGov.

Claude garnered a 10.6 percent preference among Gen Z AI users, a substantial contrast to its 1.4 percent preference among Baby Boomers and older demographics, marking the steepest generational split observed among major AI brands.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT maintained its position as the overall leader in preference across all age groups, ranging from 44.4 percent among Gen Z to 24.5 percent among Baby Boomers and older users.

Google’s Gemini secured the second spot overall, demonstrating its strongest preference among Gen X users at 22.8 percent, while also capturing 14.3 percent of Gen Z’s preference.

Conversely, Microsoft’s Copilot exhibited an inverse generational trend compared to Claude, showing weaker preference among Gen Z (4.4 percent) but its strongest appeal with Baby Boomers and older users (12.3 percent).

The YouGov report also highlighted similar generational splits in the preference for established voice assistants. Alexa, for instance, registered an 11.0 percent preference among Baby Boomers and older users, but zero percent among Gen Z.

Reuben Staines, a YouGov data journalist, noted the importance of distinguishing between brand momentum metrics, such as consideration and preference, and actual trust in a brand’s claims. Staines said this distinction is important for understanding consumer behavior in both emerging AI markets and established sectors like fast-casual dining.

Nora Hao, another YouGov data journalist, further elaborated on the nuances of brand perception. Hao stated that while brands like McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A might show high levels of consideration, other brands such as Chicken Salad Chick, Cook Out, Just Salad, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot demonstrate strong preference within their specific consumer segments, indicating that broad consideration does not always translate directly to preference or trust.

The findings underscore how rapidly evolving technology markets, particularly AI, are shaping distinct consumer segments across different age cohorts.
