Artificial intelligence agents are increasingly acting on behalf of humans in U.S. online interactions, creating an “agentic web” that is transforming web traffic and e-commerce conversion rates, according to industry reports released in early 2026.
Automated traffic grew approximately eight times faster than human traffic year over year in 2026, Adobe reported. AI agent traffic to U.S. retailers surged 393 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2026, converting 42 percent better than non-AI traffic, Adobe data indicated.
The agentic web represents an evolution from traditional AI search functions, with AI search considered a subset of the broader agentic web activity, TechCrunch reported. Companies like Google, Perplexity, and ChatGPT are developing tools that enable these agentic interactions.
Cloudflare reported that automated bots already account for a significant portion of internet traffic, with malicious bots making up 30 percent of all web traffic in 2023, CNBC reported. The agentic web builds on this automation, but with agents performing more complex, user-directed tasks.
Building websites for these AI agents requires a new approach called machine-first architecture (MFA), Cloudflare stated. This framework is based on four pillars: Identity, Structure, Content, and Interaction, designed to optimize sites for autonomous machine engagement.
The growth of the agentic web signifies a shift in how online businesses must design their digital presence. Websites traditionally built for human interaction now need to consider how AI agents will interpret and engage with their content and services.
Major online platforms such as LinkedIn, GitHub, and Wikipedia are already structured in ways that are highly machine-readable, making them inherently compatible with agentic web principles, according to TechCrunch. This machine-readability facilitates efficient data extraction and interaction by AI agents.
The superior conversion rates of AI agent traffic suggest a future where businesses could increasingly rely on these autonomous entities to drive sales and engagement, potentially reshaping digital marketing strategies.
