Global advertisers are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence for campaign management, but industry experts caution that high-quality data and human strategic oversight are essential to achieve genuine business outcomes beyond platform-defined metrics.
The widespread integration of AI across major advertising platforms underscores its growing influence, with more than 1 million advertisers globally now utilizing Google‘s Performance Max and Meta‘s Advantage+ campaigns accounting for 35 percent of all U.S. retail ad spending.
TikTok’s automated Smart+ solutions also saw a significant increase, rising from 9 percent to 42 percent of performance campaigns within a single year, according to industry reports.
While Meta reported that advertisers using Advantage+ creative features experienced an average 22 percent increase in return on ad spend, these results were heavily dependent on the quality of the data inputs, a key concern for marketers.
A report from Adtaxi emphasized that AI amplifies existing strategy rather than replacing it, highlighting the need for strong data inputs to avoid what some termed “accelerated inefficiency.”
Jennifer Flanagan of Adtaxi stated that a lack of transparency in AI systems poses a risk, as these systems may optimize for metrics defined by the advertising platform instead of focusing on broader business health.
Google plans to introduce updates for Performance Max in April 2026, including first-party audience exclusions. This feature aims to enable marketers to target new customers more effectively, provided their customer relationship management (CRM) data is clean and accurate.
The increasing reliance on AI tools across platforms like Google, Meta, and TikTok necessitates a renewed focus on the foundational elements of data integrity and human strategic involvement to ensure advertising investments yield measurable business value.
